The animal featured on the cover of All About Kai MacTane: The Definitive Reference is a coyote. The image was created by Dallas, TX artist Bob Cooksey, and is used with his permission.
Coyotes are known for their adaptability, resourcefulness, and their high intelligence. Roughly the size of a Collie dog, coyotes range across the United States and much of Canada, reaching as far north as Alaska and as far south as Costa Rica.
Coyotes are opportunistic hunters eating a varied and omnivorous diet, including squirrels, rabbits and other small mammals, birds, insects, fruit, berries, carrion and garbage. In areas with larger game, coyotes will form packs capable of taking down deer.
Prolonged attempts by humans to reduce coyote populations have failed; their resourcefulness and adaptability have enabled them to thrive and increase their territory. In many areas, they have moved into the ecological niches previously occupied by wolves.
